Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) or drones offer a whole new dimension for conducting infrared inspections. Technological advancements, combined with lower equipment costs, make aerial thermal imaging more affordable than ever before; however, it is not a ‘fly and shoot’ exercise. Similar to ground-based thermography, drone-based thermal imaging requires proper selection and use of a thermal imager along with accurate interpretation of imagery. Additionally, drone operation requires a knowledgeable and skilled pilot to safely fly the aircraft in accordance with existing regulations.
